If you’re unsure whether we’re close enough for you, send us a quick message and we’ll help you work out the best class times and options.
We run age-specific classes so everyone trains with people at a similar stage of physical and social development. Our typical class groupings are:
Mini Martial Artists – roughly 3–5 years
Junior Martial Artists – roughly 6–9 years
Youth Martial Artists – roughly 10–14 years
Adult Martial Artists – 15+ years
Exact age ranges and class times can be found on our timetable page, and we’re always happy to advise which class would suit you or your child best.
We teach a modern striking system influenced by kickboxing and sport karate. That means:
Lots of focus on punches, kicks, footwork and movement
Sparring that follows light-continuous and points-fighting rules (controlled, technical, not wild brawling)
A big emphasis on timing, distance, strategy and self-control
Our goal is to make students adaptable: able to move well, think clearly under pressure, and use their skills responsibly.
Step-by-step:
Fill in the enquiry form on this site or use our booking link.
We’ll contact you to confirm the best class for your age and level.
You come along for an introductory session, meet the team and try a class.
If it’s a good fit, we’ll help you choose the right membership option and get you set up.
We’ll guide you through every step – you don’t need to know anything in advance.
Yes – we offer a trial so you or your child can experience the class, meet the instructors, and see if it feels like the right environment.
After that, if you’d like to continue, we’ll talk through membership options and answer any final questions you have.
For kids and adults, the first session is all about:
Meeting the instructor and team
Learning how the class runs (lining up, basic rules, safety)
Trying some simple techniques and games/drills
Getting a feel for the atmosphere and coaching style
You won’t be thrown in at the deep end. We’ll partner you with someone suitable, keep things light, and build up gradually.
No. That’s our job.
We’ll start you exactly where you are and help you progress at a sensible pace. Many of our members start with low fitness and flexibility – training regularly is what improves it.
Membership is paid monthly and gives you access to regular classes each week. We train 48 weeks of the year, with a small number of planned breaks for holidays and maintenance.
Different membership options are available depending on how many classes per week you attend. For full, up-to-date details, please check our membership page or contact us.
We operate on a 12-month membership, but classes run for 48 weeks.
The remaining weeks are planned breaks for:
School holidays
Instructor training and development
Necessary closures (Christmas, maintenance, etc.)
Your monthly tuition is averaged out across the year so your payments are the same each month, even though there are short breaks built in.
Your membership covers:
Regular weekly classes (according to your membership level)
Structured curriculum and belt progression
Coaching from qualified instructors
Access to our member communication channels and updates
Tuition does not automatically include testing / grading fees, workshops, camps, or special courses unless you are on a membership that specifically states otherwise.
Yes, there are some additional costs over time:
Uniform and equipment – All uniform and gear must be purchased through The Martial Arts Method.
Grading / belt testing fees – These are separate from monthly tuition.
Workshops, camps and special events – Optional extras that may carry an additional fee.
We keep everything as clear and transparent as possible, and we’ll always let you know costs in advance.
We don’t believe in trapping people with long, confusing contracts.
Tuition is paid monthly.
You can cancel at any time with 30 days’ written notice via letter or email.
Paid-in-full programmes are non-refundable.
All the details are clearly laid out in our membership agreement.
We understand that families often train together. Family and sibling options are often available and may change over time, so the best thing to do is contact us directly and ask about current family pricing.
Short-term breaks for holidays or minor injuries are usually covered within our 48-week training structure.
If you’re dealing with a longer-term injury or situation, get in touch and we’ll look at options with you on a case-by-case basis. We always try to be fair and reasonable.
Life happens – kids get ill, work runs late, traffic exists.
Where possible, and subject to availability, we’ll do our best to help you attend an alternative class in the same week or as soon as practical. This isn’t guaranteed, but we’ll always try to accommodate you.
For your trial, wear:
Comfortable sports clothing (T-shirt and jogging bottoms/leggings)
Socks or bare feet
A bottle of water
If you decide to join, you’ll be required to purchase our official TMAM uniform and any necessary protective equipment.
Yes. For safety, quality and consistency, all uniforms and training equipment must be purchased through The Martial Arts Method.
This ensures:
The correct fit and protection
Consistent standards across the class
Equipment that’s suitable for our training and sparring rules
Once you join as a member, we expect students to train in full TMAM uniform and use TMAM-approved equipment as soon as they’ve received it.
Turning up neat, prepared and ready to train is part of the discipline we teach.
All physical activity carries some risk – but we do everything we reasonably can to minimise it:
Qualified, experienced instructors
Age-appropriate drills and games
Controlled contact and strict safety rules
Regularly checked equipment and training area
Minor bumps and bruises do happen, as with any sport, but our focus is on safe, controlled training, not reckless fighting.
Sparring is an important part of our training, but we introduce it gradually:
Younger and beginner students start with light, game-based drills and controlled contact.
Protective gear is used where appropriate.
Control, respect and safety are non-negotiable.
No one is thrown straight into hard sparring. We build confidence, movement and defence skills first.
No. Our focus is on light-continuous and points-based sparring, not full-contact knockouts.
We care far more about:
Timing
Accuracy
Movement
Decision-making
Self-control
than we do about “winning by any means”.
Yes. Our instructors are:
Experienced martial artists
Trained in coaching and class management
DBS-checked and safeguarding aware
We take your safety, and especially your child’s safety, extremely seriously.
Very common question – and usually, yes.
We work with lots of children who are shy, anxious, or lack confidence. Our approach:
Clear structure and routine
Friendly, supportive instructors
Gradual progress – no putting them on the spot
Partner drills and small wins early on
If you’re worried, let us know in advance so we can keep an extra eye out in their first few sessions.
Martial arts can be brilliant for channelling energy and improving focus. Our classes are active, structured and full of short, engaging drills.
We set clear boundaries and expectations while still keeping the environment positive and encouraging.
We have experience working with a range of additional needs and neurodivergent students. Every child is different, so the best first step is:
Let us know about any diagnoses, needs or triggers.
Tell us what usually helps them feel safe and supported.
Start with a trial and see how they respond.
We can’t promise our environment will be right for every single child, but we will always try our best to adapt within the normal structure of the class.
Yes, parents are welcome to stay and watch from the designated viewing area, especially for younger children.
As children grow in confidence, some parents choose to drop off and collect instead. If we ever need to adjust viewing arrangements for safeguarding or space reasons, we’ll always let you know.
Yes. Absolutely.
A large number of our adult members started in exactly that position. We’ll:
Build your fitness and flexibility gradually
Offer options and progressions during drills
Encourage you to work at your own pace
You don’t need to “get fit first” – you’ll get fitter by turning up.
Probably not. We have adults training from their late teens up into their 40s, 50s and beyond.
We’ll adjust intensity and expectations based on your age, experience and any previous injuries. The goal is long-term progress, not breaking you in the first week.
Short answer – no.
We build up to contact gradually, with:
Technical drills
Controlled partner work
Clearly-defined sparring rules
Protective equipment where needed
You will learn how to defend yourself and how to deal with contact, but this is done sensibly and progressively.
